Aeolian Islands · visited September 2026 · sources checked 24 September 2026

Lipari: the Aeolian service island, with a castle on top.

Shelter by wind direction, berths and buoys, fuel, provisions, boat bits and the best shore day in the archipelago. Researched shore intel from published sources—not a pilotage plan or a live forecast.

The verdict

Lipari is where the Aeolians keep their shops, fuel, hospital and ferries. If a smaller island has run you out of bread, diesel or patience, this is the reset. The catch is shelter: no single spot is good in every wind, and hydrofoil and ferry wash reaches most of the east-coast berths. Pick your side of the island by the forecast and ask the operator before committing.

Shelter by wind direction

  • West to north-west: the east coast is in the lee—Marina Lunga, Pignataro, Marina Corta and Portinente. Avoid the south-west bays.
  • North to north-east: avoid Canneto and Porticello. Pignataro can take surge from the NNE; Valle Muria and the Portinente buoy field are better bets. In northerlies at Porticello, anchor south of Monte Rosa.
  • South-east (scirocco): surge into Marina Corta; Marina Lunga and Pignataro are exposed. Look west.
  • Channel swell: Vinci and Punta Crepazza catch swell running through the Lipari–Vulcano channel.

Sources summarise exposure differently—Pignataro is listed as sheltered from the NE and SE quadrants yet exposed to scirocco and greco-tramontana on the same page. Treat this as a starting point, then check the forecast, chart and operator.

Berths, buoys and landing

  • Porto Pignataro (north of town): VHF 74; 090 9880354; WhatsApp 339 8497800. Water, power and a shuttle into town.
  • Eolmare, Pignataro: 090 9814233. About 120 berths, showers, 24-hour tender assistance, shuttle 09:00–12:00 and 18:00–24:00; office 08:00–20:00, season 1 May–15 October.
  • Giovannazzo Servizi Nautici, Pignataro: 090 9817015.
  • Lipari Service pontoon, Marina Lunga: 330 370123 / 333 6589768. Watch the ferry wash.
  • Ormeggio Eolie buoys, Portinente / Porto delle Genti: VHF 73, sand bottom, dawn-to-dusk access. The operator describes it as sheltered from the NE, SW and NW quadrants; it is fully open to the east.
  • Marina Corta: the pretty little harbour under the castle, but only about ten places for small craft and rentals; the south-east pier belongs to the hydrofoils. Use it for the dinghy, not the yacht.
  • Landing restrictions: a 2025 Coast Guard ordinance closed the Marina Corta south breakwater head, its north quay and the Porticello landing. Whether it still applies—check locally.

Coast Guard (Circomare Lipari): 090 9880819. Sea emergency: 1530.

Fuel, water and laundry

  • Eolian Bunker fuel pier, Marina Lunga: 090 9812335 / 090 9216237. Its own pages give conflicting hours and VHF channel—check locally before motoring over.
  • Eni, Via F. Crispi: 090 9811640; listed as serving boats too.
  • Water and power: on the Pignataro pontoons.
  • La Bella Lavanderina self-service laundry, Via Ten. Mariano Amendola 27: 334 2043607. Hours: check locally.

A little history

Lipari was rich long before anyone came for the granita. In the Neolithic its obsidian—black volcanic glass that makes a razor edge—was traded across the Mediterranean. The Greeks knew it as Meligounis; colonists from Knidos settled around 580 BC. Barbarossa’s fleet sacked the town in 1544, and the Spanish walled the acropolis in 1556—those are the walls you climb through today. Under Fascism the island was a place of internal exile; the anti-Fascist Carlo Rosselli escaped from here in 1929. The white scars on the north-east coast are old pumice quarries.

What to see & do

  • The Castello: the walled acropolis above Marina Corta. Give it a proper morning.
  • Museo Archeologico “Luigi Bernabò Brea”, Via Castello (090 9880174): one of the great archaeological museums of the Mediterranean—obsidian, Bronze Age finds and a remarkable collection of Greek theatrical masks. Published hours weekdays 09:00–19:30 (last tickets 18:30), Sundays and holidays 09:00–13:30; €8 / €4.
  • Cathedral of San Bartolomeo with its Norman cloister, inside the walls.
  • Quattrocchi viewpoint: the classic look across to Vulcano and the Faraglioni. Bus or taxi.
  • Terme di San Calogero: an ancient spa, closed to bathing since 1975 and now an exhibition space. Check opening locally.

Excursions

  • Stromboli by night: the classic Aeolian boat trip. Tours leave Marina Corta early afternoon, call at Panarea, then wait off Stromboli’s Sciara del Fuoco after dark to watch the eruptions, returning around 22:30. Several operators on the waterfront; book the day before and check that it is running.
  • Round-the-island boat tours and trips to Vulcano from Marina Corta.
  • Diving: La Gorgonia, Marina Corta, 335 571 7567.

Eat & drink

  • Filippino, Piazza Municipio (090 9811002): founded 1910, Michelin-listed, the island’s classic table. Published hours 11:30–14:30 and 19:00–22:30.
  • E Pulera, Via I. Vainicher Conti 11 (090 9811158): dinner 19:30–23:30, garden setting, April–October.
  • Kasbah, Vico Selinunte 43; Nenzyna, Via Roma 4 by Marina Corta; Gilberto e Vera, Via Garibaldi 22, for sandwiches and wine. Hours: check locally.
  • Pasticceria Subba, Corso Vittorio Emanuele 92, since 1930; Café La Precchia on the Corso; Chitarra Bar on Marina Corta for the sundowner.
  • What to order: capers, pane cunzato, granita with brioche, the day’s fish, and a glass of Malvasia delle Lipari to finish.

What I’d do

Sort fuel, water and a proper shop first, while the wind lets you. Then the Castello and museum in the morning, a granita on the Corso, and the Stromboli-by-night trip if it is running. If the forecast swings north, move before the evening rather than after it.
