Everything Zen sailing in clear blue Ionian water

Current shore sheet

Riposto: Porto dell'Etna, the adult berth below the volcano.

A proper marina stop south of Taormina with fuel, mooring help, shore services, and Etna access. The sea is small today; the thunderstorm risk is the only thing allowed to be dramatic.

Quick verdict

Riposto is the sensible evening move from Taormina / Giardini Naxos: short coastal hop, protected marina, fuel before sunset, and a berth that does not require everyone to pretend anchor-watch is charming.

Marina notes: read first

Marina Porto dell'Etna / Marina di Riposto

Official site describes a modern 150,000 sqm basin, operational year-round, inside the port of Riposto.

Contact VHF 74

Call ahead before entry for berth and fuel-dock instructions. Mooring assistance is listed as 24/7.

Services 370 berths, fuel until sunset

Official site lists 370 berths, 22 superyacht berths, on-site petrol/diesel, video surveillance, and technical support.

Best use Protected berth, fuel, services, and Etna/Taormina base. Much cleaner than another exposed night in the Taormina pocket if thunder risk lingers.
Weather rule Sea state is small today, but yellow thunderstorm risk means watch Etna and the Messina side. If a cell is building, wait offshore or delay departure. Squalls are the villain, not swell.
Fuel rule Fuel station listed as operating until sunset. Do not plan a late-night fuel miracle. Sort diesel before dinner if you need it.

Arrival plan

  • Leave the swim stop once the afternoon sky has settled, ideally after the 17:00 cell risk has passed.
  • Coastal hop south from Taormina / Giardini Naxos, roughly 12-15 nm depending on exact anchor position.
  • Call Porto dell'Etna on VHF 74 before entry. Ask for berth, approach, and fuel-dock instructions.
  • Keep the engine ready and the thunderstorm radar/eyes on Etna. If the clouds start building, let them finish their tantrum first.

Get ashore

Riposto is practical Sicily: waterfront restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, pharmacies, train access, marina services, and Etna-trip logistics. Taormina is still close enough for the glamour run, but Riposto is where the boat gets looked after.

Best things to do

  • Porto dell'Etna marina: berth, fuel, services, and the main point of the stop.
  • Waterfront dinner near the harbour: easy first-night win after lines are on.
  • Etna day trip: Riposto is a practical low-level base for volcano tours, wine routes, and the cooler inland escape.
  • Taormina / Giardini Naxos by taxi or train connection if the crew wants the hill-town theatre without anchoring there.

Crew missions

Captain Ron bottom line

Riposto is the adult decision: berth, services, fuel, and a cleaner night than freelancing off Taormina. Wait out any afternoon thunder stink, then make the short hop when the sky behaves. Reef the optimism; not the dinner plan.
