ARRIVAL WATCH: Valletta-area waves rise from roughly 0.55–0.60 m late morning to 0.75–0.85 m this evening, with short 4–6 s periods. Keep the approach tidy, watch traffic and ferry wash, and do not turn a daylight crossing into a night arrival for the sake of a few miles.

Ashore, the Valletta bastions, Upper Barrakka, old streets, pastizzi, coffee and the waterfront make the easy first walk; provisioning, fuel and chandlery are the useful jobs once secure. Captain Ron’s town verdict: Malta is the home berth, but the harbour entrance still deserves a professional hat.

Portopalo was the actual overnight staging stop before departure: a fishing harbour with the useful south-facing bay anchorage, a small provisions run, seafood and views toward Capo Passero and Isola delle Correnti. It is a stepping stone rather than a guaranteed marina berth, so confirm holding, swell, landing and local harbour instructions on arrival. Captain Ron’s stop verdict: good launchpad for Malta, provided the sea gets a vote and the rope department leaves before the forecast grows teeth.
